Former Sooner is #1 Overall Pick in CFL Draft
The 2015 CFL draft was a proud day for the Ottawa Sooners' organization. Former Sooner Alex Mateas was the number one overall pick, selected by his hometown Ottawa Redblacks. The 6-foot-4, 310-lb centre was a captain at the University of Connecticut and ranked third by CFL Scouting. He signed a 3 year contract with the CFL club.
“I’m really looking forward to it. I’m home and I have the opportunity to play football,” Mateas told the Ottawa Sun. “I just want to contribute to the team any way I can, whether it’s centre ... or guard.
"I coached Alex at Myers Riders Bantam and Varsity," said Sooners' head coach John Buck. "I can safely tell you that, at that time, I didn't envision him going first overall in the CFL draft. Nobody would have. This is a real tribute to his dedication and work ethic. It's a great message to our young guys with the Sooners. It can be done."
Former Sooners linebacker Ron Omara was also selected in the draft, going 29th overall to Hamilton.
